Skin to Skin

I thought holding Lane and Sloan in my arms was the best 45 minutes of my life, but I was wrong! Holding them skin to skin was even better!! It was amazing feeling their little fingers and toes wiggle against my chest, and feeling their chest rise up and down. They both did extremely well during that time, that we are hoping to make this part of our daily routine. I can't wait to hold again tomorrow:)

Both Lane and Sloan gained weight tonight. She gained a little over an ounce and now weighs 2 ounces 5 pounds. Her little cheeks, legs, and arms are beginning to fill out. Sloan gained 10 grams. It was not enough to make him  1 pound 14 ounces, but we are still excited about the gain! Lane is starting to look quite a bit bigger than Sloan, so we are hoping he starts to catch up with his sister soon. As of tonight, both babies are receiving an extra 4 calories with each feeding. I know it doesn't sound like much, but when they are only getting 26 calories with each feeding 4 more sure is nice! We are hoping that will help with weight gain as well.

Lane's ventilator rate did go down to 17 lastnight, but she wasn't tolerating it as well as they would have liked so it is back to 19 today. Maybe tomorrow morning we will walk in and see it back to 17. Sloan's rate was lowered quite a bit yesterday. He started the day at 45 and by the end of the day it was 28! We are so happy with their progress.

Our family and friends will have to remind us of this, but Scott and I can't wait to hear them cry!!:) Once they are off the ventilator we will finally be able to hear our little babies! Our prayers are that day is soon.

  1. Both you and the babies gained a lot from the skin to skin contact. See how much Sloan inproved on the vent. Big improvements to come in the days ahead.

  2. congrats!!! kangarooing is the best ever. Ryan always did so well while he was snuggled up next to me or his daddy.

i'm sure they've told you the secret of the nicu -little girls are stronger and fight harder than than little boys....think it's a precursor to girls having to be tough later in life. my 9 yr old daughter is still mentally tougher (or as they say bossy)than my 11 and 14 yr old boys! haha...ryan was called a "wwb" on more than one occasion... sloan will catch up soon.

  4. Very good to hear. I once volunteered at a NICU in Tacoma, Wa and when the babies would cry I was allowed to hold them. Best couple of hours of my week in college. Gained perspective and allowed me to see the little ones grow each week for that year I did it. Many thoughts and prayers for you all. I enjoy reading this blog.
